One of the major advantages to having dish TV has always been the sheer number of channels you have access to. While cable has made strides in recent years to keep up with dish TV, the fact is that the widest selection of programming is one of the main selling points of dish TV services. That being said, there is a phenomenon that’s crept up recently that has some providers of pay-TV worried, and that is streaming TV via the Internet.

To be sure, Internet TV is still in its infancy, and most cable or dish TV providers aren’t exactly quaking in their boots. Adoption of Internet TV is somewhat slow. If you doubt that, look at the lackluster success of the Apple TV device. Even after the re-launch of this product was announced this summer, demand has not grown tremendously.

Here are some of the sources that folks are using to get their Internet TV:

• Netflix. The Netflix service is ideal for many folks. It allows you to stream movies, TV shows and more to your computer. You can also stream those movies to your TV using a Netflix-enabled device. Many of the newer Blu-Ray players are actually being produced to be compatible with Netflix as well as the other Internet TV services. Of course, you also have DVD service with Netflix, where you can have DVDs sent to you through the mail. There is a monthly fee for the Netflix service, although this fee is small compared to the cost of cable or dish TV.
• Amazon on Demand. Amazon’s Video on Demand service offers programming in a streaming manner, as well. Typically, these are on a per-diem cost rather than as a subscription.
• iTunes. Like Amazon on Demand, you can also watch episodes of some TV shows via iTunes.
• Hulu. The idea behind Hulu is to offer streaming television programs to users via the Internet. Hulu relies on an advertising model rather than a subscription model. Hulu has more current programming than you would find on Netflix or on Amazon on Demand, for example, and often has shows the night after they air on TV.
• Network websites. Some networks broadcast their TV shows the next day after they air via their websites, as well.

Like many other areas of concern, Hollywood really does a poor job at portraying mental illness. There are some exceptions, of course, but for the most part TV shows turn problems like Asperger’s Syndrome or Multiple Personality Disorder into a sensationalized and often “zany” condition. Yet, having characters being pumped down through your dish TV signal who are mentally ill does serve at least one positive purpose, and that is raising awareness of those conditions.

Let’s take a look at some of the TV characters out there who have some sort of serious mental illness condition:

• Tara. Tara Gregson is the title character for a relatively new program on Showtime. This character suffers from multiple personality disorder, and during the course of the program she’ll move from her identity as a mother to “Buck,” a beer-loving redneck man, or to one of her other identities. Multiple personality disorder (also formerly called “Dissociative Identity Disorder”) makes for great TV plots, but it’s also easy to become almost cartoonish.
• Maggie, from ER. Maggie is a character on the hit NBC show ER. Played by Sally Field, this character suffers from bipolar disorder. She’s depicted as a loving parent, but also can be seen in a very distraught condition frequently. This is probably the most sympathetic character with mental illness we’ve seen on TV in a while.
• Doctor Kevin Casey from Scrubs. Michael J. Fox portrays a brilliant doctor who visits the crew at Sacred Heart hospital. He can be seen endlessly washing his hands, as well as exhibiting physical and verbal ticks that indicate he suffers from OCD. The treatment on this show is primarily for comedic purposes, although there is a point at which Casey’s suffering does become sympathetic, as well.
• Doctor Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. Jim Parsons’ portrayal of the brilliant – yet annoyingly quirky – physicist has won several awards. Although no diagnosis has been discussed on the show, it’s readily apparent that Sheldon suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. The show’s portrayal is occasionally cartoonish, but Sheldon remains a somewhat enjoyable character as well.
• Doctor Hawkeye Pierce from M*A*S*H*. Few who saw the final episodes of this show will forget how Hawkeye struggled with depression, even to the point of psychosis, at the end of the Korean war. While this portrayal is dated in terms of the actual psychological ideas being tossed around, it still remains a powerful look at what depression does to a person.

One of the best things about having dish TV is that you’ve got access to so many programming choices that you’re almost never without a good show to watch. From classic networks like TV Land, which show you all of your favorite shows of the past, to the current stuff, dish TV gives you lots of choices. One of the common threads you’ll find in your favorite shows, of course, is a family – and that family almost always has a dad. In honor of the recent passing of Tom Bosley (a.k.a. Howard Cunningham of Happy Days) we’d like to take a moment today to celebrate the best TV dads of all time:

• Howard Cunningham. We’ll start out by honoring Tom, whose character was the father of Joanie and Richie. From his comfortable living room chair, this wizened hardware store owner offered sage advice, comfort and consolation.
• Fred Sanford. Many TV dads, for one reason or another, are single dads. Fred Sanford is the ultimate one. From his faux heart attacks to his get-rich-quick schemes, it’s a good thing that his son Lamont was always there to help.
• Sherrif Andy Taylor. Andy Griffith played perhaps the quintessential single dad in the Andy Griffith Show. We’re pretty sure that you’re going to walk around all day with that whistle theme song stuck in your head now.
• Cliff Huxtable. Always a classic, Bill Cosby’s TV dad persona expressed many of the frustrations and trials that parents go through as they watch their children come of age.
• Charles Ingalls. Now there was a real man. He built his own home with the sweat of his brow and the blood from his veins, yet he was tender enough to tuck in his little girls at night.
• Al Bundy. Arguably, this is a more realistic portrait of today’s dad than what Charles Ingalls was, but like Fred Sanford this dad had a seemingly-endless supply of schemes, all of which were doomed to failure.
• Steven Keaton. Family Ties was all about hippies trying to figure out the whole “responsible, wage-earning parent” thing, and none did it better than Alex Keaton’s dad.

Turn on your dish TV this week, and see if your favorite TV dad makes an appearance.

When it comes to trying to dominate the Internet and electronic media landscape, a few names come to mind: Microsoft, Apple and, of course, Google. Each has had their moments in the sun, and the market goes back and forth as far as who’s on top. One thing that each of those giants also has in common is that they either have or are making forays into the more traditional markets, including attempts at getting a share of the television entertainment pie. Recently, Google announced a partnership in which it’s working with a dish TV provider to offer something known as the Logitech Revue.

The Logitech Revue is going to offer integrated Google TV functionality to subscribers who use Dish Network. This Dish TV service offers a number of different features to customers, including Internet access, access to the customer’s DVR content, as well as the Video on Demand Service. The Google TV capabilities add in exciting options, including search features users can use at home.

The Logitech Revue with Google TV comes in the form of a companion box that goes along with the regular dish TV box from Dish Network. In addition, it incorporates a keyboard which allows users to take advantage of the many features and functions of Google TV. The box will work with an HDMI-ready television and a Dish Network set top box.

It’s expected that the Logitech Revue with Google TV will be available for wide release sometime in October. It will be offered both to new subscribers of Dish Network, as well as existing users who have a subscription to the dish TV service.

This move comes at a significant time, as more and more consumers are turning to services such as Netflix, which can be streamed directly to your television set via a set-top box, your console gaming system or an appliance. It’s no coincidence that Apple recently unveiled a new version of its AppleTV appliance which that comes in at a significantly lower price point that previous models have. The only thing left is for Microsoft to enter the fray now.

Just three decades ago, cable television hadn’t really yet spread out across the country. Sure, major metropolitan areas had it, and it was on the cusp of becoming a cultural phenomenon. However, for many folks, if you wanted to subscribe to the movie channels, you needed to buy an expensive satellite dish – one that’s ten times or more the size of today’s dish TV devices.

Today, cable still hasn’t made it to many places. There are some old dirt roads that are never going to have it. On top of that, many folks prefer dish TV to cable for a number of reasons, such as channel selection or cost.

The big question for many folks is, then, what would you do without your dish TV?

Let’s say that a meteor storm hits the planet tomorrow, knocking out all of the dish TV satellites. (For purposes of this argument, we’ll assume that the military satellites out there are all equipped with lasers, and that security isn’t so much an issue for the country as entertainment.) This would mean that you’d have to either go to cable for your TV needs, or you’d have to settle for those three over-the-air networks.

(Maybe you live in a metropolitan area, and in addition to CBS, NBC and ABC you also have FOX and Whatever the CW is calling itself these days. In that case, you’re settling for five networks.)

Could you survive without all of that dish TV?

Of course you could survive. You might have to buy a digital antenna for your television in order to get those networks. You might have to invest in an appliance that will let you stream TV, such as Apple TV or a Blu-Ray player that can stream Netflix. The options out there, quite frankly, are somewhat staggering.

In a worst case scenario, you could become one of those families that you read about occasionally in the newspaper or a magazine. You know, the ones that drop their dish TV or cable in order to spend more time together as a family, or to keep the TV from rotting their kids’ brains.

A great way to spend time with the entire family is to share a good family movie at home. There are a wide variety of different genres of movies available to consider, but some are clearly better suited for families, especially families with children, than others. Next time you are planning a family get-together, there are many movies that are well worth considering because they will suit each member of your entire family, young and old.

In addition to their digital satellite TV service, Dish TV offers HDTV or high definition television programming.  It is estimated that they now feature around 2,000 hours per week of HD programming.  With the ongoing customer satisfaction demands that the company continually strives to meet, Dish TV now offers the most diverse programming package available among all of the satellite TV providers out there.  Additionally, their HD equipment is superb and nothing short of state-of-the-art technology.

For those few of you who may not be familiar with what high definition television or HDTV is (and I doubt there are very many individuals out there who haven’t heard of this), this is state of the art technology that provides the viewer with higher resolution video compared to traditional TV systems.  There is roughly 5 times the amount of pixels per frame (1 to 2 million) than what traditional TV provides.

HDTV wasn’t always the quality broadcasting technology that it is today.  Originally, HDTV used analog techniques.  However video compression is used today in order to digitally broadcast the signal.  In any event, if your budget allows and you have a high definition TV, this is the way to go when you sign up with Dish TV.  The company offers what is called the HD Pak which includes Discovery Theater, ESPN, Net, Net Movies, and TNT all of which is broadcast in the HDTV format.

Occasionally, Dish TV will offer tremendous promotional offers in order to entice new customers.  Typically, these promotions run for up to 6 months where you can receive HD programming FREE of charge.  Once the promotional period end, the charges to keep it are really minimal and don’t impact your monthly bill that badly.  This is probably one of the key reasons that Dish TV now has roughly 15 million customers nationwide, maybe even more than that.

Just take the normal steps that you would do if you were trying to decide on a satellite TV provider in the first place.  In other words, do your homework and research your options.  With the economy the way it is nowadays, budget needs to be your primary consideration anyway because it is real easy to overspend on the luxury of having satellite TV.  When you start adding all the extras, it’s conceivable that you could be spending upwards of a $100 per month, maybe more.
